what if most of my debt has accumulated as a result of a terrible addiction that I have been suffering from. I am not in treatment, the treatment seems to be working but I can no longer afford to pay for these debts, live and pay for the necessary treatment.

When the debts are largely a result of addicitons you may find that a creditor may oppose your discharge application.
This is an avenue that is available to any creditor. What they are permitted to do is voice their concernes in front of the court and the court will determine if there is any additional requirements that are imposed as a result of this opposition.
