I dont think I understand how the laws around student loans work. Is it that you need to be out of school for 10 years or is it that 10 years from the date you started making payments?

It is 10 years from the date you last attended school. So if you last attended school in January 2001, to be eligible to be cleared from that debt the soones you should file would be February 2011. That way it would be clear that the 10 years has elapsed.
