Hello,

I am looking to filing a proposal. I am in a great deal of debt, and from what I have understood I have to file a special type of proposal because of the level of my debt.

This makes sense to me but I am a little concerned about what will happen if the proposal doesn`t go through. I realize that this will put me into bankruptcy but my concern is how will this impact my girlfried.

All of the debt is in my name and was accrued before I started living with my girlfriend, but lets say this goes sideways and I am forced into bankruptcy would this have any negative repercussions to her. She has just bought a house (in her name with her money, I only live in it with her and am not connected to the house in any way) and I would hate for my stupid mistakes to cause her problems.

A bankruptcy really won’t have any direct impact on your girlfriend. She won’t be responsible for your bankruptcy, she won’t be obligated to make payments on your behalf and there will be no impact on her credit or any assets that she owns.

Your proposal / bankruptcy is yours alone and won’t have a detrimental impact on anyone else unless they have signed on the proposal or on some of your debts.
