I think I need to file for bankruptcy. From what I have read you suggest that beacuse I have debts with my bank that I normally use, I need to open a new account at some place I don`t owe money. My big concern is will I be able to get a checking account elsewhere? Won`t they do a credit check?

Most people don’t have much difficulty getting a basic checking or savings account. While negative credit information can be a reason to refuse extra privileges / benefits from the bank it cannot be the sole reason for refusing a basic account.
