Wage garnishment and bankruptcy

Will the filing of a bankrupcy stop wage garnishments from my creditors?

Right now I am right in the midst of a separating from my wife and my lawyer doesn`t want me to go bankrupt.

However with large support payments and decreased work hours I have not been able to keep up with my debts and see no way of being able to catch up in the future.

I have a few creditors who are threatening to garnishee, and one creditor who just sent me a copy of a legal document that I think is a garnishee. So if I declare bankruptcy will this stop them form being able to take my wages?

As soon as you file a bankruptcy there is an automatic Stay of Proceedings that is implemented which prevents your creditors from being able to garnish your wages.

The only trick is that you need to provide a name and fax number of someone in your payroll department so we can notify them of the Stay immediately and instruct them to no longer honor that garnishee.
