years of avoidance

I have been avoiding collection agencies due to credit card debt for a minimum of 3 years and in some cases 4 yrs. My amount owing not including accumulated interest is around $22,000. I just had a baby and am on EI. As far as going back to work, this won`t be for a few years. The stress of this debt has been eating at me for years. Is there a time period where they will leave me alone or do I bite the bullet and file for bankruptcy? My relatives are getting harassing calls every month as to my phone number etc. which is very embarassing. Please help!!!

There is technically a statute of limitations, but it ultimately suggests that the creditors have to not make any attempts to collect on the debts for two years for the debts to be extinguished. So practically there are very few instances where the statute of limitations kicks in.

So you will likely have to look at a bankruptcy or something similar to stop the harassing calls and the pressure the creditors are putting on you.
