Do I need to be employed in order to file for a bankruptcy?

I just starting a new job, how long must I be employed before I can declare bankruptcy?

There is no employment requirement associated with bankruptcy eligibility. To be eligible to file for bankruptcy the only requirements that must be satisfied are:

1. you must reside in Canada, resided in Canada in the last 12 months, or own property in Canada;

2. You must owe more than $1,000.00; and

3. You must be unable to pay your debts as they become due.

If you can meet these criteria you are eligible regardless of your employment situation.
