Student loans

I have a student loan I got in October 1997, I then got another student loan in September 1998 then in 2001 I filed for bankruptcy. It has been ten years now. I haven’t heard anything from my student loans in a long time.  Am I still responsible for these debts or were they cleared by my bankruptcy.

Likely your student loan debt still exists. At the time you filed for bankruptcy you would have been subject to the 10 year rule, meaning that because more than 10 years had not elapsed between your last day of attendance and the date you filed bankruptcy, your loans would not have been released by filing a bankruptcy.

Now, there is a statute of limitations that may play a role, but as long as Student Loans has taken the necessary collection steps (and most creditors are savvy enough to do so) then the loan would still exist and you would still be responsible for it an any interest and penalties that have accrued.
